Evening escapes to Santa Monica
I live in LA, and one of my favorite escapes is just a short drive to Santa Monica Beach. It’s the kind of place that never gets old, no matter how many times I visit. Every trip has its own special vibe, and I honestly think it’s one of the best beaches I’ve seen.
The Beach Itself
Santa Monica Beach is beautiful and, more importantly, very clean. The sand is soft — the kind that feels almost cool and silky under your feet — which makes it a genuine pleasure just to walk on. That cleanliness is a big part of why I keep coming back.
Running alongside the beach is a long concrete walkway, perfect for walking or cycling. If you’re up for it, you can follow this path all the way down to Long Beach, passing a string of other beaches along the way — Muscle Beach, Venice Beach, and a few others. It’s a great stretch for anyone who wants to combine sightseeing with a bit of exercise, and you’ll spot both regular bikes and electric ones cruising the path.
Santa Monica Pier
The pier is really the centerpiece of the whole area. Built out over the water like a small bridge, it has fishing spots at the far end and a compact amusement park on top, complete with a small roller coaster and a giant wheel.
Along the pier you’ll find:
- Small food stalls and souvenir shops
- Street performers — musicians, magicians, dancers, and other freelance artists putting on impromptu shows
- The official end point of Route 66, marked by a photo spot that draws travelers who’ve followed the historic route across the country
That Route 66 marker is worth a moment on its own. It’s one of America’s most famous long-distance trails, historically tied to the achievement of completing a cross-country journey, and Santa Monica Pier marks its symbolic finish line. People line up here just to take a photo at the sign.
Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
Right on the pier is one of my favorite restaurants: Bubba Gump, themed entirely around Forrest Gump. It’s built like a full fan experience — movie props, souvenirs, and a menu where dishes are named after characters and scenes from the film. The food itself, seafood-focused as in the movie, is genuinely excellent. I’d put it on any list of must-try restaurants in the US.
The Promenade and Nearby Streets
Beyond the pier, the main road leading in is lined with restaurants and small parks — simple green spaces meant for sitting rather than theme-park-style attractions. Along here you’ll find:
- Mexican street food vendors
- Italian restaurants
- Ice cream and frozen yogurt shops, including a Ghirardelli chocolate and ice cream spot
- Fast food options like McDonald’s
Just a short walk further takes you to Little Italy, where you can pick up even more authentic Italian dishes.
Food on the Beach (My Favorite Ritual)
My go-to move: grab some chicken nuggets from a stand near McDonald’s, or chorizo from one of the street vendors, set up a chair right on the sand, and just eat while watching the ocean. It’s simple, but it’s one of the best parts of the whole experience — and it works just as well at night as it does during the day.
Nightlife on the Beach
Santa Monica Beach has a real nighttime scene. It stays clean, safe, and lively well into the night, and I’ve comfortably sat out on the sand until 2 a.m. If you’re looking for a late-night spot with energy and people around, this is genuinely one of the best I’ve come across.
Parking Tips
Parking is one area where it pays to know the details:
- Lots near the beach are, in my experience, the cheapest option overall — around $15–$20 for a full day (valid until roughly 2:00 p.m. cutoff for that rate).
- Lots further away often advertise lower rates but charge hourly instead, sometimes around $10/hour, which adds up fast if you stay more than an hour. If you’re just stopping by briefly, parking a bit further out and walking in isn’t a big deal — just budget a little extra walking time to reach the beach.
Final Thoughts
Between the pier, the beach, the food, the street performers, and the walkway stretching down to Long Beach, Santa Monica packs a lot into one place. Whether you’re after a lively afternoon, a scenic bike ride, a great seafood dinner, or just a quiet late-night sit on the sand, it delivers. It remains, hands down, one of my favorite spots in LA.
